Khongor Sand Dunes, also known as Khongoryn Els, are among the largest and most impressive sand dunes in Mongolia. Located in the Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park in the South Gobi Province, these dunes stretch approximately 180 kilometers (112 miles) and can reach heights of up to 300 meters (984 feet). The Khongor Sand Dunes are often called the “Singing Dunes” because of the deep, resonant sound they produce when the sand moves, creating a natural symphony that echoes across the desert.
The dunes are bordered by the Khongor River, which nourishes a surprising ribbon of green at the base of the sand, supporting vegetation and wildlife amidst the arid landscape. Khongor Sand Dunes are famous for their breathtaking sunrises and sunsets, when the dunes glow in shades of orange, pink, and gold. Visitors can explore the dunes on foot or by camel, enjoying panoramic views from the summits. This area offers a perfect mix of adventure, natural beauty, and solitude, making it a must-visit spot for those seeking a true desert experience in Mongolia.
