Vastness of Gobi

Our first day's journey will take us to Baga Gazriin Chuluu, which translates to "Stone of the Little Place." On our way, we will pass by the majestic Zorgol Khairkhan Mountain, located in the Bayanjul Soum of Tuv Province. Baga Gazriin Chuluu, located in Dundgovi Province, is a remarkable geological site known for its striking rock formations and vast desert landscape. The area is often referred to as the "Small Stones" due to the clusters of large stone structures scattered across the region. It is not only a natural wonder but also a site of historical significance, with ancient petroglyphs, rock carvings, and archaeological remains that showcase Mongolia’s rich cultural history. Visitors can enjoy hiking through the landscape, exploring the fascinating rock formations, and experiencing the peaceful desert environment. It’s also an excellent spot for those interested in Mongolia’s prehistoric art and history. Today's journey will consist of 28% paved roads and 72% natural dirt roads.

To get from Baga Gazriin Chuluu to Ongiin Khiid, you will travel through a combination of roads that take you through both desert and steppe landscapes. Baga Gazriin Chuluu is located in Dundgovi Province, roughly 250 kilometers south of Ulaanbaatar, and the journey from there to Ongiin Khiid will involve a mix of paved and rougher, unsealed roads.

The area around Ongiin Khiid is historically significant, being the site of a once-prominent Buddhist monastery. To reach it, you will pass through scenic Mongolian countryside and experience the vast open spaces and desert beauty, typical of the region. The monastery, which had been a major center of Mongolian Buddhism, is now a peaceful site of ruins and remains of religious structures, adding a deep cultural touch to the journey.

In total, the drive to Ongiin Khiid from Baga Gazriin Chuluu takes several hours, depending on road conditions, with approximately 60 to 100 kilometers of rougher terrain as you move closer to the monastery. The journey from Ongiin Khiid to Khongoryn Els via Bayan Zag is a 200-kilometer adventure through the Gobi Desert. The road passes through Bayan Zag (Flaming Cliffs), famous for its red rock formations and paleontological history. The route is mostly unpaved and rugged, making a 4x4 vehicle ideal for the trip. Along the way, you'll see vast deserts, wild camels, and nomadic settlements. Once you reach Khongoryn Els, you'll be greeted by the towering sand dunes, known for their "singing" sound as the wind moves through the sand. This journey offers both an adventurous spirit and a chance to connect with Mongolia’s natural beauty. This day’s route will be 100% natural dirt roads

After waking up early and having breakfast, we will cross the Khongoryn Els sand dunes and head towards Yolin Am (Eagle Valley) and Düngeneegiin Am. This day’s journey will consist of 64% paved roads and 36% unpaved natural routes.

Yolin Am, or Eagle Valley, is a deep, narrow gorge nestled in the Gurvan Saikhan Mountains in the heart of the Gobi Desert. Famous for its dramatic beauty, the valley is surrounded by towering cliffs, and in the summer, the area boasts lush greenery and even some ice that persists through the warmer months. The valley’s name comes from the golden eagles that once soared above, and it remains a prime destination for hikers and nature lovers. Visitors can enjoy walking through the gorge, feeling immersed in a world where the sound of rushing water and the towering rock walls create a magical atmosphere. Even in the summer, the sight of ice sheets contrasting with the desert heat adds to the mystique of this remote location.

Düngeneegiin Am is another secluded treasure in the Gobi, often referred to as the "silent canyon." This remote gorge, surrounded by dramatic desert cliffs, offers a peaceful and quiet environment, perfect for those seeking solitude. The landscape is mesmerizing with sharp, towering rock formations, and the stillness of the desert enhances the beauty of the surroundings. Düngeneegiin Am is less visited by tourists, offering an opportunity to connect with nature in its purest form. The tranquil atmosphere here makes it an ideal destination for those looking to reflect and experience Mongolia's wilderness firsthand.

Our journey for the day will be 76% on paved roads and 24% on natural dirt roads.

On this day, we will travel entirely on natural, rugged dirt roads to reach Ikh Gazriin Chuluu. Located in the Dundgovi province of Mongolia, Ikh Gazriin Chuluu is a captivating and significant natural landmark in the Gobi Desert. Known for its striking rock formations and vast, open landscape, the area is a true paradise for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers. The impressive rock clusters, shaped by centuries of wind and weather, create a surreal, almost otherworldly environment.
